Large Single-Center Experience With Extubation During Neonatal and Pediatric Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation
A single-center retrospective cohort study was performed to describe our experience with extubation of ECMO patients in the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU), pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This is the largest reported single-center cohort of extubated pediatric patients to our knowledge.
Successful VA ECMO on an adolescent pre-B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemiapatient with necrotizing fasciitis from Clostridium septicum
We present a case of a 16-year-old male with pre-B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and Clostridium septicum necrotizing fasciitis successfully supported with veno-arterial (VA) ECMO. The patient underwent induction chemotherapy for ALL but developed severe septic shock and necrotizing fasciitis.
Antibiotic prescribed to millions can cause rare, dangerous reactions
The antibiotic widely referred to by the popular brand name Bactrim is prescribed to an estimated 3 million people in the US each year. For most, it's a helpful and important drug, but in rare cases, some patients have had serious and even fatal reactions to it.
Recurrent diffuse alveolar hemorrhage and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation utilization in a hematopoietic stem cell transplant patient with Hunters syndrome
We describe the natural history of a three-month-old patient with Hunter Syndrome with hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) who developed recurrent diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The patient underwent HSCT with several complications, including veno-occlusive disease and DAH.
